Authentic Bagels Are Coming Soon to “The Best Side”

If you’ve visited Grand Rapids’ West Side recently, you’ve probably seen the construction of Victory on Leonard humming along. It’s no secret that the site is the future home of a 120-unit, mixed-use apartment development—a welcome addition to the housing offerings in the city. The exciting surprise is the announcement of their soon-to-be lower-level resident: Bagel Kitchen.

With its flagship location in Gaslight Village, Bagel Kitchen has built community and helped neighbors and businesses make connections—and they’ve done it all with the highest standards of sustainability. The current space attracts students from the nearby schools, as well as residents of all ages who make a bagel sandwich and a coffee part of their daily routine.

Ready to expand and bring that same energy to the West Leonard corridor, Bagel Kitchen owners, Marc and Shannon Schulz, have been collaborating with Victory Development Group—a partnership that includes Jack Hoedeman, Brian Hamrick, Jeff Royce, and Brad Laackman of Honor Construction. The new location is set to open in summer 2023, as new residents are moving in.

In the meantime, the Schulzes have continued to serve hand-rolled, boiled authentic bagels, as well as an assortment of refreshments, at their 2228 Wealthy St. SE shop. And, they’ve done it all while maintaining a strong set of values that drives their business, centered on eco-consciousness, transparency, community, and collaboration. In short, they’re not just here to make quality fare, they’re here to make a difference.

“I love that we have a good bagel,” Marc says. “We’re very particular about our service and how we make our bagels, sandwiches, and coffee; we’re that way because we want to bring people in and bring people back. But, we also want to do it sustainably. 99% of our supplies that go out to our customers are compostable—and all of our food waste is compostable. It’s a way that we can show people that there’s a different way to handle things in our industry, without using single-use plastics.”

West Siders may need to patiently wait for all this goodness to come to their stretch of town, but it’ll be worth it. For now, stop into the East GR location or order online at
